Recently, I had the chance to visit and exchange ideas at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT) of the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS). The rich scientific atmosphere, cutting-edge technologies, collaborative spirit, and insightful talks and lectures by scientists in various disciplines were a great learning experience. I’m grateful for the exceptional hospitality and well-planned schedules provided by SIAT.

One highlight of my visit was the Institute of Brain Cognition and Brain Disease. Walking through its corridors felt like navigating a hallway where art and science meet. The walls are adorned with detailed, colorful brain connectivity maps created by SIAT scientists, providing a high-definition “roadmap” of the brain’s complex neural networks.

Understanding how neurons connect and function is crucial to unraveling the mysteries of brain diseases like Alzheimer’s, autism, and depression. The advanced technologies and innovative approaches at SIAT are leading the way in this endeavor.

The high-field animal MRI system provides excellent spatial resolution and tissue contrast without radiation, allowing for high-precision imaging of animals such as mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and monkeys.

The work being done at SIAT is advancing our understanding of the brain and paving the way for new treatments and interventions for brain diseases.
